🩺 Clinical / Exam Application
A patient presents with left lower quadrant abdominal pain, fever, and a history of low-fiber diet. This presentation points strongly toward diverticulitis of the sigmoid colon — because the sigmoid is both the most common site for diverticula (small pouches) to form and the most common site for those pouches to become inflamed. Knowing which segment sits in the left lower quadrant lets you connect the pain location directly to the anatomy.
⚠️ Exam Alert
The hepatic flexure (near the liver, between ascending and transverse colon) and splenic flexure (near the spleen, between transverse and descending colon) are frequently tested landmarks — know which organ each flexure is named after and which side of the abdomen it sits on.
