What the Neolithic Revolution was
A shift from a foraging (hunting and gathering) lifestyle to a farming (agricultural) lifestyle, beginning roughly 10,000 BCE. This wasn't one single event — it happened independently in multiple places around the world.

Independent origins of agriculture around the world
The Fertile Crescent (Middle East, ~10,000 BCE) domesticated wheat, barley, and sheep. China (~8,000 BCE) domesticated rice and millet. Mesoamerica (~7,000 BCE) domesticated maize and squash. New Guinea independently domesticated taro. These separate origins show farming wasn't spread from a single source but was independently invented multiple times.

The positive consequences of farming
Sedentism (living in permanent settlements rather than moving seasonally), food surplus, population growth, social stratification (more complex hierarchies), and eventually the rise of states and cities all followed from agriculture's ability to support larger, denser populations.

The negative consequences of farming
Despite the benefits, agriculture also brought an increase in infectious disease (denser populations and closer contact with domesticated animals spread illness more easily), a decline in nutritional quality for many populations (compared to the more varied diet many foragers had), and increased warfare (competition over land and resources, and more to fight over once surplus and property existed).

Before: small, mobile foraging groups with a varied diet and lower population density.

After: a settled village like Çatalhöyük, with denser housing, stored grain surplus, and a growing population — but also more crowded living conditions that make disease spread more easily, skeletal evidence sometimes showing nutritional decline compared to earlier foraging populations, and new forms of social inequality emerging as some households accumulate more surplus and property than others.

Don't describe the Neolithic Revolution as purely a positive advance for human wellbeing. Exams often specifically test whether you know the negative trade-offs (disease, nutrition, warfare) alongside the more commonly assumed benefits — a common trap is describing agriculture as an unambiguous improvement in quality of life.
