What provenience means
Provenience refers to the precise three-dimensional location (x, y, z coordinates) where an artifact was found — its exact position within a site, not just "somewhere in this general area."

What context means
Context refers to an artifact's relationship and association with everything else found around it — other objects, soil layers, and features it was found alongside.

Primary vs. secondary context
Primary context means an object is still in its original, undisturbed position where it was first deposited. Secondary context means the object has been moved from its original position after deposition (by natural processes, later human activity, or disturbance) — this reduces, though doesn't necessarily eliminate, its interpretive value.

Why looting is so destructive scientifically, not just ethically
When an artifact is looted, its provenience and context are permanently lost — no one will ever know its exact original location or what it was found alongside. Even if the object itself survives and later ends up in a museum, its scientific value has been largely destroyed, because so much of what archaeologists learn comes from an object's relationship to everything around it, not from the object in isolation.

Modern recording tools
Total stations (surveying instruments that precisely record 3D coordinates), GIS (Geographic Information Systems, for mapping and analyzing spatial data), and photogrammetry (creating 3D models from overlapping photographs) are now standard tools for recording provenience during excavation.

Compare two finds.

The first is a plain pottery sherd, but it's found in situ (primary context) next to a hearth, alongside animal bones and charred seeds, with its precise coordinates recorded using a total station — this single sherd can now help date the hearth, tell us what was being cooked, and reveal how the space was used.

The second find is a beautiful gold object recovered from a looter who dug it up and sold it with no record of where it came from — despite being more visually impressive, this object can tell us almost nothing scientifically, because its provenience and context are gone forever.

The humble, well-documented sherd is scientifically worth more than the undocumented gold piece.

Exams test whether you can distinguish provenience from context clearly, explain the difference between primary and secondary context, and why looting is a scientific problem, not just a legal/ethical one.

Don't assume an object's monetary or visual value equals its scientific value. A plain, well-documented artifact in primary context is often scientifically more valuable than a spectacular object with no recorded provenience — this is the exact contrast the exam expects you to grasp.
