Why anthropologists use a timeline of species, not one continuous line
Human evolution didn't happen as one species smoothly turning into the next. Instead, fossil evidence shows a sequence of related species, each with its own defining traits, that eventually led to us. Memorizing five anchor species in order gives you a skeleton (so to speak) for the whole story.

~4.4 million years ago: Ardipithecus ramidus ("Ardi")
An early bipedal (upright-walking) species living in forested parts of Ethiopia. Important because it shows walking upright began earlier, and in a more forested environment, than scientists once assumed.

~3.2 million years ago: Australopithecus afarensis ("Lucy")
Fully bipedal, but with a small brain (~450 cubic centimeters — roughly chimp-sized). Lucy is the most famous fossil in this timeline and shows that upright walking came long before big brains.

~2.5 million years ago: Homo habilis
The first species associated with stone tools (called Oldowan tools, the simplest stone tool tradition). Brain size increases to about 600cc.

~1.8 million years ago: Homo erectus
The first hominin species known to leave Africa. Associated with fire use and more sophisticated Acheulean stone tools. Brain size around 900cc.

~300,000 years ago: Homo sapiens
Anatomically modern humans, with modern skeletal proportions and a brain around 1,350cc. Note: the encephalization quotient is the technical term for brain size relative to body size — it's the more precise way scientists compare "brain power" across species rather than just raw brain volume.

The oldest (Ardi) already has hips built for walking upright, even though her surroundings were still forested.

Next to her, Lucy's skeleton confirms full bipedalism, but her braincase is barely bigger than a chimpanzee's — proof that walking came first.

Move down the table: Homo habilis's skull sits next to a simple stone flake tool. Homo erectus's skull is paired with fire-cracked rock and a more refined hand axe, and this individual's ancestors were the first to walk out of Africa. At the end of the table, a Homo sapiens skull shows the full brain expansion and modern face shape we'd recognize today.

Exams test whether you can recite the five species in order using the mnemonic sentence, attach one defining fact to each of the five species, and roughly how many million years ago bipedalism first appears in this timeline.

Don't assume brain size increased steadily alongside bipedalism from the very start. The timeline shows a roughly two-million-year gap between full upright walking (Lucy, ~3.2 mya) and the first major brain-size jump (Habilis onward) — that gap is a favorite exam point (see the next lesson).
