What "life history" means
Life history refers to the timing pattern of an organism's growth, reproduction, and death across its lifespan — essentially the overall strategy a species uses to allocate energy between surviving, growing, and reproducing.

The human pattern: extremely slow
Humans show slow growth, an unusually long juvenile period (extended specifically for learning), late age at first reproduction compared to body size, and — uniquely among primates — menopause, plus a substantial post-reproductive lifespan afterward.

The grandmother hypothesis
Proposed by Kristen Hawkes, this hypothesis argues that post-menopausal grandmothers who help provision and care for their grandchildren increase those grandchildren's survival rates. Because this benefits the spread of the grandmother's genes indirectly (through her descendants), natural selection favored a long post-reproductive lifespan — explaining why menopause and extended lifespan evolved together in humans, unlike in most other primates.

The trade-off behind a long childhood
A large, complex brain takes a long time to develop fully. The extended human childhood is partly the cost of building and "wiring" that brain — a slow, expensive process that requires years of relative safety and provisioning by others.

Alloparenting
Cooperative child-rearing, where individuals other than the biological parents (grandmothers, other relatives, community members) help care for children. This cooperative support system is thought to be what makes humans' unusually long, resource-intensive childhood and large brain size evolutionarily viable at all — a single parent alone likely couldn't sustain the investment required.

Now picture a grandmother in that human family, past her reproductive years but still very much alive and active — helping gather food, watch children, and pass on knowledge.

According to the grandmother hypothesis, her contribution increases her grandchildren's odds of survival enough that natural selection favored women living well past menopause, something essentially unique to humans among primates. Meanwhile, alloparents — aunts, older siblings, community members — share the burden of raising a child whose brain won't be fully developed for close to two decades.

Exams test whether you can explain the grandmother hypothesis in your own words, name what makes human life history distinct among primates, and why alloparenting matters to this whole picture.

Don't describe menopause as simply "a biological decline" without connecting it to the grandmother hypothesis. On an anthropology exam specifically, the expected answer connects menopause to an evolutionary explanation involving grandmothering and inclusive fitness, not just a description of hormonal change.
