Modern Homo sapiens evolved in Africa roughly 300,000 years ago, then dispersed out across the rest of the world starting around 60,000–70,000 years ago, largely replacing other hominin populations they encountered.

Fossil evidence
The oldest known Homo sapiens fossils come from Jebel Irhoud in Morocco (~300,000 years ago) and Omo Kibish in Ethiopia — both African sites, supporting an African origin.

Genetic evidence
Mitochondrial DNA analysis traces all living humans back to a common maternal ancestor ("mitochondrial Eve") roughly 150,000–200,000 years ago; Y-chromosome analysis traces a common paternal ancestor ("Y-chromosome Adam") to roughly 300,000 years ago. Both lines of evidence trace back to Africa.

The rejected alternative: the multiregional hypothesis
This older, now-rejected theory proposed that modern humans evolved in parallel in multiple regions of the world simultaneously (from local Homo erectus populations), rather than originating in one place and spreading out. The genetic and fossil evidence favors Out of Africa instead.

Replacement vs. assimilation — it's not a clean either/or
The classic Out of Africa model implied total replacement of other hominins encountered along the way. But we now know some interbreeding occurred outside Africa — with Neanderthals and Denisovans (see the next lesson). A genetic "bottleneck" effect is also observed: genetic diversity decreases the farther a population's ancestors traveled from Africa, since each new group leaving carried only a subset of the original diversity.

Combined with the oldest Homo sapiens fossils also being found in Africa, this is why the Out of Africa model, not the multiregional hypothesis, is the accepted explanation.

Exams test whether you can state the Out of Africa model's core claim in one sentence, name both key fossil sites, and why the multiregional hypothesis is rejected.

Don't describe Out of Africa as "total replacement with zero interbreeding." That was the original strict version of the model; current evidence shows some interbreeding did occur with Neanderthals and Denisovans outside Africa, which nuances the simple replacement picture.
