The result, and key examples
Together, these three innovations enabled enormous stained glass windows and unprecedented height. Chartres Cathedral (1194–1220) features flying buttresses, its famous rose windows, and three portal sculptures. Notre-Dame de Paris (1163–1345) represents classic Gothic design. Sainte-Chapelle (1248) pushed this logic to its extreme, with walls that are almost entirely glass. A 19th-century Gothic Revival (Pugin, Viollet-le-Duc, Westminster Palace) later reintroduced these forms.
