The Age of Reptiles, in Three Acts
The Mesozoic era spans 186 million years and is divided into three periods — Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous — collectively known as the Age of Reptiles due to the dominance of dinosaurs throughout nearly the entire era. The three-period structure traces a clear arc: recovery after catastrophe (Triassic), the rise to full dominance (Jurassic), and a long, diverse peak abruptly ended by a second catastrophe (Cretaceous).
This era is bookended by two of the most consequential events in the history of life: it begins right after the End-Permian extinction nearly wiped out all complex life, and it ends with the K-Pg extinction, caused by the Chicxulub asteroid impact, which eliminated all non-avian dinosaurs and opened the door for the Cenozoic's rise of mammals.

Triassic (252–201 Ma)
A recovery period following the End-Permian extinction. The first dinosaurs, first mammals, and first pterosaurs all appear during this period. Ends with the Triassic-Jurassic extinction.
Example: the earliest true dinosaurs appeared roughly 230 million years ago, relatively late in the Triassic.

Jurassic (201–145 Ma)
Dinosaurs rise to full ecological dominance — familiar giants like Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Allosaurus all lived during this period. The first birds appear (Archaeopteryx, roughly 150 Ma), and the supercontinent Pangaea begins breaking apart as the Atlantic Ocean starts to open.
Example: Archaeopteryx, often cited as an early transitional bird, shows both reptilian and avian features and dates to the late Jurassic.

Cretaceous (145–66 Ma)
Flowering plants (angiosperms) diversify dramatically, and dinosaurs like T. rex and Triceratops reach their peak. The period — and the entire Mesozoic era — ends abruptly with the K-Pg extinction, caused by the Chicxulub asteroid impact 66 million years ago.
Example: the name 'Cretaceous' comes from the Latin word for chalk, reflecting the extensive chalk deposits that formed during this period.

Why the Mesozoic's Boundaries Matter
Both boundaries of the Mesozoic — its start and its end — are marked by two of the 'Big Five' mass extinctions covered elsewhere in this sub-subject. This makes the Mesozoic a useful case study in how mass extinctions function as both endings and beginnings: the era only exists in its familiar dinosaur-dominated form because the End-Permian extinction first cleared ecological space for reptiles to rise, and it only ends when the K-Pg extinction cleared space in turn for mammals.

⚠️ Most Common Mesozoic Periods Mistakes
Don't lump all 'Age of Reptiles' dinosaurs into one generic Mesozoic bucket — Stegosaurus (Jurassic) and T. rex (Cretaceous) are separated by tens of millions of years and never coexisted, a very common point of confusion. Also remember the Mesozoic's boundaries are both mass extinctions — don't confuse the End-Permian extinction (which starts the era) with the K-Pg extinction (which ends it).
