The Paleozoic era spans roughly 289 million years and is divided into six periods, each marking a distinct milestone in the development of early complex life: the sudden appearance of most animal body plans, the first land plants, the first fish, the first forests, the first reptiles, and finally the assembly of the supercontinent Pangaea right before the era's catastrophic close.
This period sequence essentially tells the story of life's slow but steady conquest of land — starting entirely in the ocean at the Cambrian's start, and ending with reptiles, insects, and vast forests thriving on land by the Permian's end, right before nearly all of it was nearly wiped out.
💡 Memory Trick
'COSDCP' — Cambrian, Ordovician, Silurian, Devonian, Carboniferous, Permian — the six Paleozoic periods in order. Say it as a clipped, fast phrase: 'Cos-D-Cp' almost sounds like a code name, and treating it that way (a strange abbreviation you repeat until it sticks) is often more effective than forcing a sentence — sometimes the raw acronym itself, repeated a few times, is the fastest anchor when there are six items in a row like this.

The Cambrian Explosion — most modern animal phyla appear in the fossil record within a geologically short window.

Marine invertebrates diversify further; the period ends with a glaciation event and associated mass extinction.
Example: the End-Ordovician extinction is one of the 'Big Five' mass extinctions, driven by glaciation.

Silurian (444–419 Ma)
The first vascular land plants and the first jawed fish appear, marking early steps toward both land colonization and vertebrate evolution.
Example: jawed fish from the Silurian represent a major evolutionary leap that eventually leads toward all later vertebrate life, including humans.

Devonian (419–359 Ma)
Known as the 'Age of Fishes' — the first forests and first amphibians appear, marking the first vertebrates to move onto land.
Example: Devonian amphibian ancestors like Tiktaalik represent a key transitional fossil between fish and land vertebrates.

Carboniferous (359–299 Ma)
Vast tropical coal swamps form (the source of most of the world's coal), and the first reptiles appear.
Example: most coal burned globally today originated as plant matter buried during the Carboniferous.

The supercontinent Pangaea fully assembles, and the period ends with the End-Permian extinction — the single most severe mass extinction in Earth's history.
Example: the End-Permian extinction killed roughly 96% of marine species and 70% of terrestrial species, far exceeding even the extinction that killed the dinosaurs.

A Story of Land Colonization
Read as a whole, the six Paleozoic periods trace a consistent arc: life begins entirely aquatic at the Cambrian's start, plants and jawed fish begin the move toward land in the Silurian, vertebrates fully colonize land by the Devonian, and by the Carboniferous and Permian, complex terrestrial ecosystems (forests, reptiles, insects) are fully established — right before nearly all of it collapses in the End-Permian extinction.

⚠️ Most Common Paleozoic Periods Mistakes
Don't confuse the End-Ordovician extinction (glaciation-driven, ending the second period) with the much larger End-Permian extinction (the worst in history, ending the whole era) — these are two separate events, and mixing them up is a common exam mistake. Also remember 'Age of Fishes' specifically refers to the Devonian, not the Cambrian, even though fish-like ancestors trace back further.
