Oceans Have a Life Cycle, Just Like Anything Else
In 1966, geologist J. Tuzo Wilson proposed that ocean basins follow a predictable, repeating life cycle — opening through continental rifting, widening into a mature ocean, and eventually closing again through subduction and continental collision, ultimately leaving behind a suture zone where the ocean once existed. This complete process, now called the Wilson Cycle, typically takes somewhere between 300 and 500 million years from start to finish.
The Wilson Cycle is one of the most powerful unifying concepts in plate tectonics because it reveals that seemingly permanent features like oceans are actually temporary, cyclical phenomena on a geologic timescale — the Atlantic Ocean, which feels utterly permanent on a human timescale, is itself just partway through a Wilson Cycle that will eventually see it close again.

Continental crust begins to stretch and crack, forming a rift valley — the very earliest stage of a potential new ocean basin.

Terminal Ocean
The ocean basin has narrowed dramatically as it approaches full closure.
Example: the Mediterranean Sea represents a terminal ocean, a shrinking remnant of a once much larger ocean basin (the ancient Tethys Sea).

Suture Zone
The ocean has closed completely, and the two continents on either side have collided, leaving behind a mountain range marking the suture where the ocean once existed.
Example: the Himalayas mark the suture zone where the ancient Tethys Sea fully closed as India collided with Asia.
