Two Independent Axes of Classification
Igneous rocks are classified along two completely independent variables that combine to determine which specific rock you're looking at. The first axis is texture, controlled by cooling rate: magma that cools slowly underground (intrusive/plutonic) grows large, visible crystals, while lava that cools quickly at the surface (extrusive/volcanic) forms small or even glassy crystals. The second axis is composition, controlled by chemistry: rocks range from felsic (silica-rich, light-colored, lower density) through intermediate and mafic to ultramafic (silica-poor, dark-colored, iron/magnesium-rich, higher density).
Because these two axes are independent, the same chemical composition produces a different-looking rock depending on cooling rate โ and this is exactly why granite and rhyolite, despite being chemically nearly identical, look completely different.

Reading Texture
What Crystal Size Tells You
Texture alone can tell you a great deal even before considering composition. Coarse-grained (phaneritic) texture with crystals visible to the naked eye indicates slow cooling deep underground. Fine-grained (aphanitic) texture with crystals too small to see individually indicates rapid cooling at or near the surface. Glassy texture (like obsidian) indicates cooling so fast that no crystals had time to form at all. Porphyritic texture โ large crystals embedded in a fine-grained groundmass โ records a two-stage cooling history: slow cooling underground followed by a rapid eruption that quickly solidified the remaining melt.
