Memory Palace
A visual-spatial technique for students whose brain prefers rooms and objects to letters and phrases

Not every brain learns best through wordplay. The Memory Palace technique converts the 12 cranial nerves into a walk through a familiar physical space โ€” useful on its own, or as a backup when a phrase-based mnemonic isn't sticking.

What the Memory Palace technique actually is

The Memory Palace (also called the "method of loci") is an ancient memory technique where you mentally place items you need to remember at specific locations along a route through a space you already know well โ€” your childhood home, your current apartment, or even your daily walk to clinicals. To recall the items later, you mentally "walk" the same route in order, and each location cues the next item.

๐Ÿ’ก Why This Works When Phrase Mnemonics Don't
Phrase mnemonics rely on verbal/auditory memory. Spatial memory โ€” your ability to remember where things are in a physical space โ€” is a separate, often stronger memory system. Students who struggle to hold onto "Oh Oh Oh To Touch..." sometimes find that picturing 12 objects in their childhood hallway sticks far more easily.
Building Your Palace
A worked example โ€” using a familiar hallway
Step 1
Choose a route you know without thinking
Pick somewhere overlearned โ€” your childhood bedroom to the front door, or your current apartment from bed to kitchen. It needs at least 12 distinct "stops" along the way (door, closet, mirror, hallway, stairs, etc.).
Step 2
Place one cranial nerve at each stop, using an image tied to its function
At stop 1 (bedroom door), picture yourself sniffing a strong smell as you open it โ€” cues CN I, Olfactory. At stop 2 (mirror), picture your reflection with huge, wide-open eyes โ€” cues CN II, Optic. At stop 3 (light switch), picture your eyes darting around as you flip it โ€” cues CN III, Oculomotor (eye movement).
๐Ÿ’Š The more exaggerated, strange, or funny the image, the better it sticks โ€” a giant nose sniffing the doorknob is more memorable than a plain image of "smell."
Step 3
Walk the route in your mind to recall, in order
Under exam pressure, close your eyes for two seconds and mentally walk your route from the start. Each stop triggers the image, which triggers the nerve. Because the route order is fixed and overlearned, the nerve order comes out correctly almost automatically.

A nursing student is asked, without warning, to name CN IX during a skills check-off.
Palace Walk
The student mentally starts at their bedroom door and counts stops: door, mirror, light switch, hallway closet, bathroom, kitchen doorway, stove, fridge, pantry... Stop 9 (pantry, where they pictured gagging on a strong food smell) instantly cues CN IX, Glossopharyngeal โ€” tied to the gag reflex.
Why It Worked
The student had walked this exact hallway thousands of times in real life, long before nursing school. That pre-existing spatial memory did the heavy lifting โ€” the cranial nerve images were simply attached on top of a structure that was already rock-solid in memory.
๐Ÿ“Œ NCLEX Application
NCLEX doesn't test study technique directly โ€” but it rewards whichever technique gets you to fast, accurate recall under time pressure. The Memory Palace is worth building specifically for content you keep forgetting with other methods, since building a full palace takes more upfront time than memorizing a phrase โ€” it's a targeted tool, not a replacement for every mnemonic.
โš ๏ธ The Trap โ€” Building the Palace Too Close to Exam Day
The Memory Palace technique depends on the route itself being deeply overlearned โ€” if you invent a brand-new imaginary route the night before an exam, you're now trying to memorize two new things at once (the route AND the nerve images), which defeats the purpose.

The safeguard: Always build the palace on a route you've physically walked hundreds of times already โ€” never a route you're imagining for the first time.
