Where Bile Comes From
Liver Makes It, Gallbladder Stores It
Bile is produced continuously by the liver and then stored and concentrated in the gallbladder between meals. When fat enters the small intestine, the gallbladder contracts and releases concentrated bile into the duodenum.
What Bile Actually Does
Emulsification, Not Digestion
Bile doesn't chemically digest fat — it has no enzymatic activity of its own. Instead, it emulsifies large fat globules into much smaller droplets, similar to how dish soap breaks up grease, dramatically increasing the total surface area of fat exposed to digestive enzymes.
Why Emulsification Matters
Lipase Needs Surface Area
Fat is not water-soluble, and pancreatic lipase (the actual fat-digesting enzyme) works in the watery environment of the small intestine. Without emulsification, fat would clump into large globules with very little surface area, and lipase could only act on the outer surface — emulsification is what allows lipase to work efficiently on the fat's full volume.
Consequences Of Inadequate Bile
Fat And Vitamin Absorption Suffer
Without a gallbladder (or with bile duct obstruction, liver disease, or other bile-related dysfunction), fat emulsification is impaired, which reduces the efficiency of fat digestion and can subsequently reduce absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K), since their absorption depends on fat being properly processed.
