Duodenum
Completing Digestion
The duodenum is the first and shortest section of the small intestine, where pancreatic enzymes and bile from the liver/gallbladder enter to complete the chemical digestion of carbohydrate, protein, and fat that began earlier in the process.
Jejunum
The Primary Absorption Site
The jejunum is the middle section, and it's where the majority of nutrient absorption actually takes place — most carbohydrates, amino acids, and fats are absorbed here, aided by the extensive villi and microvilli lining its walls.
Ileum
Specialized Final Absorption
The ileum is the final and longest section, specializing in absorbing vitamin B12 and bile salts specifically (which are then recycled back to the liver). It also serves as a backup site for absorbing any remaining nutrients that weren't fully absorbed in the jejunum.

Predictable, Section-Specific Problems
Because each section has distinct specialized functions, damage or removal of a specific section produces predictable, section-specific absorption problems — ileal disease or resection specifically threatens B12 and bile salt absorption, while broader small intestine damage (as in celiac disease, which particularly affects the jejunum) impacts general nutrient absorption more broadly.
