Soluble Fiber
Dissolves And Gels
Soluble fiber dissolves in water, forming a gel-like substance in the digestive tract. This gel slows digestion and the absorption of sugar, which helps blunt blood sugar spikes, and it also binds to cholesterol particles, helping lower LDL cholesterol.
Oats, beans, apples, and citrus fruits are rich in soluble fiber.
Insoluble Fiber
Adds Bulk
Insoluble fiber does not dissolve in water. Instead, it adds bulk to stool and speeds the movement of material through the intestines, which helps prevent constipation and supports regular bowel movements.
Wheat bran, whole grains, and the skins of many vegetables are rich in insoluble fiber.
