Where fossils are found: key sites
Major hominin fossil discovery regions include the Rift Valley in East Africa, Dmanisi in Georgia (notable for some of the earliest hominin fossils found outside Africa), and Atapuerca in Spain (a rich site for European hominin fossils).

Dating volcanic layers: K-Ar and Ar-Ar dating
Potassium-argon (K-Ar) and argon-argon (Ar-Ar) dating methods are used on volcanic rock layers that often sit above or below fossil-bearing sediment, allowing scientists to date the fossils indirectly by dating the surrounding geology.

Dating more recent remains: radiocarbon (C-14)
Radiocarbon dating works well for more recent hominin remains (up to roughly 50,000 years old), since carbon-14 decays at a rate too fast to reliably date much older material.

Dating teeth and bones directly: U-series dating
Uranium-series dating can be applied directly to teeth and bones, offering another method beyond dating the surrounding rock layers.

Morphological analysis: cladistics
Cladistics is a method of classifying species based on shared derived characteristics (traits inherited from a common ancestor that distinguish a group from its ancestors) — this is how scientists build family trees showing relationships between hominin species.

Paleoneurology
The study of endocasts — molds taken from the inside of a fossil skull — which reveal information about brain organization and size in extinct species, even though soft brain tissue itself doesn't fossilize.

Ancient DNA (aDNA) analysis
A revolutionary technique that extracts and sequences DNA from ancient remains. It's how an entirely new hominin group, the Denisovans, was discovered and identified — from nothing more than a single finger bone, since morphological analysis alone wasn't enough to establish it as a distinct group.

Isotope analysis
Analyzing chemical isotopes preserved in tooth enamel can reveal information about an individual's diet and even patterns of migration during their lifetime.

Picture a research team at a Rift Valley site uncovering a partial hominin skull.

First, they date the volcanic ash layers above and below the fossil using Ar-Ar dating to establish roughly when this individual lived.

Next, they take an endocast of the skull's interior to estimate brain size and organization (paleoneurology).

They compare its shared derived traits to other known hominins using cladistics to place it on the family tree. If soft tissue or well-preserved bone allows, they might even attempt ancient DNA extraction — the same kind of technique that, at a different site, identified the Denisovans purely from DNA in a finger bone, without enough skeletal material to classify them any other way.

Exams test whether you can name the three key fossil discovery sites mentioned in this lesson, match each dating method to the type of material or timescale it's used for, and how the Denisovans were discovered, and why that mattered methodologically.

Don't mix up which dating method applies to which timescale. Radiocarbon dating cannot reliably date material older than about 50,000 years — a common exam trap is applying C-14 dating to a multi-million-year-old fossil, when K-Ar or Ar-Ar dating of surrounding volcanic layers would be the appropriate method instead.
