Every calorie on a nutrition label traces back to one of three numbers — and fat's number is more than double the other two.

Calories Per Gram, By Macronutrient
Carbohydrate
4 kcal/gram
Each gram of carbohydrate, whether from starch, sugar, or fiber, yields about 4 kilocalories when the body breaks it down.
A slice of bread with 15g of carbohydrate contributes roughly 60 calories from carbs alone.
Protein
4 kcal/gram
Protein also yields 4 kilocalories per gram — the same as carbohydrate — even though the body primarily uses protein for structure and repair rather than as a preferred fuel source.
A chicken breast with 30g of protein contributes about 120 calories from protein.
Fat
9 kcal/gram
Fat provides more than double the energy density of carbs or protein at 9 kilocalories per gram. This is the single biggest reason high-fat foods pack so many calories into small portions.
A tablespoon of oil (about 14g of pure fat) contributes roughly 126 calories — from fat alone.
Alcohol
The Non-Nutrient Exception (7 kcal/gram)
Alcohol isn't a macronutrient the body needs, but it does supply energy: 7 kilocalories per gram, landing between protein/carbs and fat. Alcohol calories are considered 'empty' — they provide energy but no nutritional value.

A student is reading a nutrition label that lists 20g carbohydrate, 10g protein, and 8g fat, and needs to calculate the total calories by hand.
Carbs first
20g carbohydrate × 4 kcal/g = 80 calories from carbohydrate.
Protein next
10g protein × 4 kcal/g = 40 calories from protein.
Fat last
8g fat × 9 kcal/g = 72 calories from fat — already close to the other two combined, despite being the smallest gram amount.
Total
Adding 80 + 40 + 72 = 192 total calories — confirming why a food's total calorie count leans so heavily on the fat gram count even when fat isn't the largest ingredient by weight.

Exam questions often give gram amounts for all three macronutrients and ask you to calculate total calories, or give total calories and ask you to identify which macronutrient makes up the largest share — both require knowing 4-4-9 cold.

The trap is assuming calories scale purely by weight or grams. A food can have fewer total grams of fat than carbohydrate and still contribute a large share of total calories from fat, purely because fat's per-gram value is more than double.
